Why Trapped Air is a Danger to Your Engine

When you top off your coolant, replace a hose, or service your radiator, air can easily get trapped inside your car's cooling system. Because air doesn't transfer heat like liquid coolant does, these trapped pockets (airlocks) can block the flow of coolant, causing your engine to rapidly overheat or your cabin heater to blow ice-cold air. "Burping" or bleeding your cooling system is a straightforward DIY task that purges these dangerous air bubbles to keep your engine running cool.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Fresh coolant/antifreeze (pre-diluted 50/50 mix matching your vehicle's specifications)
  • A spill-free funnel kit (highly recommended) or a standard clean funnel
  • Safety glasses and heavy-duty work gloves
  • A rag or shop towel
  • Jack and jack stands (optional, but helpful to elevate the front of the vehicle)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Ensure the Engine is Completely Cold

CRITICAL SAFETY WARNING: Never, under any circumstances, open a radiator cap or coolant reservoir cap while the engine is hot or warm. The cooling system is highly pressurized, and opening it can spray scalding liquid and steam, causing severe burns. Let the car sit for at least 2 to 3 hours before starting.

Step 2: Elevate the Front of the Vehicle (Optional but Recommended)

Air naturally travels to the highest point in a liquid system. To make bleeding easier, park your car on a steep driveway or use a jack and jack stands to safely raise the front of your car a few inches. This positions the radiator neck or expansion tank higher than the heater core, encouraging trapped air bubbles to migrate forward and out.

Step 3: Install the Funnel

Remove your radiator cap (or the expansion tank cap if your car does not have a radiator cap). If you have a spill-free funnel, select the correct adapter, secure it to the neck, and attach the clear funnel. If you are using a standard funnel, place it securely in the neck. Fill the funnel about one-third of the way with fresh coolant. This liquid reservoir acts as a one-way seal, allowing air bubbles to escape while drawing fresh coolant down into the system.

Step 4: Set the Cabin Heater to Max

Get in the driver's seat and turn the ignition to the "On" position (do not start the engine yet). Turn your climate control settings to maximum heat and set the fan speed to its lowest setting. This opens the heater control valve, allowing coolant—and any trapped air—to flow freely through the heater core inside your dashboard.

Step 5: Start the Engine and Squeeze the Hoses

Start the engine and let it idle. While it warms up, put on your work gloves and carefully locate the upper radiator hose. Give it a few gentle squeezes. This manual pumping action helps dislodge stubborn air bubbles trapped deep inside the engine block and pushes them toward the radiator opening. You should see bubbles begin to rise and pop inside your funnel.

Step 6: Wait for the Thermostat to Open

Keep a close eye on your car's dashboard temperature gauge and the funnel. As the engine reaches its normal operating temperature (usually around 195°F to 205°F), the thermostat will open. You will know this has happened when the upper radiator hose suddenly becomes hot to the touch and the coolant level in the funnel drops rapidly as the system gulps down the fresh fluid. Keep the funnel topped up so it doesn't run dry and suck in more air.

Step 7: Watch for the Bubbles to Stop

Let the engine run for another 10 to 15 minutes after the thermostat opens. The radiator fan should cycle on and off at least once. Continue watching the funnel. You will see a steady stream of air bubbles escaping. Once the coolant level stabilizes and you no longer see any bubbles rising for 2 to 3 consecutive minutes, the system is fully bled.

Step 8: Seal the System and Test

If using a spill-free funnel, insert the fluid stopper plug into the funnel neck, remove the funnel, and pour any excess coolant back into your spare bottle. Reinstall your radiator cap tightly. Check your coolant overflow reservoir and fill it to the "Full Cold" line if necessary. Take the car for a short test drive while monitoring the temperature gauge to ensure it stays perfectly in the middle, and verify that hot air is now blowing consistently from your cabin vents.
