How to Check and Top Off Your Car's Engine Oil in 10 Minutes

Keep Your Engine Running Smoothly

Engine oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle. It lubricates moving parts, reduces friction, and prevents your engine from overheating or destroying itself. Checking your oil level regularly—ideally once a month—is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent catastrophic engine damage. Here is how to check and top off your oil in just 10 minutes.

What You Will Need

  • A clean rag, paper towel, or microfiber cloth
  • The correct type of engine oil (check your owner's manual for the specific viscosity, e.g., 5W-30)
  • A clean plastic funnel

Step 1: Prep the Vehicle

Park your car on a completely level surface. If the car is on an incline, you will get an inaccurate reading. Turn off the engine and wait at least 10 to 15 minutes. This allows the oil to drain back down into the oil pan and ensures the engine is cool enough to touch safely.

Step 2: Locate and Pull the Dipstick

Pop your car’s hood and locate the oil dipstick. It is usually easy to spot, featuring a brightly colored plastic loop or handle (often yellow, orange, or red) that is sometimes labeled with an oil can icon. Pull the dipstick straight out of its tube.

Step 3: Clean and Reinsert

Using your rag or paper towel, wipe the oil off the dipstick from top to bottom. This removes the oil that splashed up while driving. Once the metal blade is completely clean, insert it back into the guide tube, pushing it all the way down until it clicks or seats fully.

Step 4: Read the Oil Level

Pull the dipstick out once more and look closely at the tip. You will see two markings. Depending on your car, these might be two small dots, two lines, or a crosshatched textured area. The lower mark represents "minimum" (or low) and the upper mark represents "maximum" (or full).

  • If the oil residue is between the two marks, your oil level is perfect. You do not need to add any.
  • If the oil is at or below the lower mark, you need to add oil immediately.

Step 5: Top Off Safely

If your oil is low, locate the oil filler cap on top of the engine block. It will have the word "OIL" or an image of an oil can on it. Unscrew the cap and place your clean funnel into the opening.

Pour in about half a quart of the correct oil. It is crucial to add oil in small increments because overfilling an engine can cause foaming and lead to serious internal damage. Wait one minute for the new oil to drain down into the pan, then repeat Steps 3 and 4 to recheck the level. Once the oil line is near the upper mark, replace the filler cap and tighten it until it clicks.
