How to Clean a Scorched Stainless Steel Pan (Without Heavy Scrubbing)
Published on June 1, 2026The Miracle No-Scrub Method for Scorched Cookware
It happens to the best of us: you walk away for just a minute, and your dinner is scorched to the bottom of your favorite stainless steel pan. Before you spend an hour wearing out your arm with steel wool—which can scratch and ruin your cookware—try this simple, chemical-free method that uses science to do the heavy lifting.
What You Will Need
- White vinegar (1 cup)
- Water (1 cup, or enough to cover the burn)
- Baking soda (2 tablespoons)
- A non-scratch scrubbing sponge
Step 1: Boil the Vinegar and Water Solution
Pour equal parts water and white vinegar into the scorched pan until the burned food is completely submerged. Place the pan on your stovetop and bring the mixture to a rolling boil over medium heat. Let it boil for 5 to 10 minutes. You will actually see chunks of the burnt food begin to detach and float to the top.
Step 2: Add the Baking Soda
Remove the pan from the heat source. Carefully add 2 tablespoons of baking soda directly into the hot liquid. Warning: It will fizz up rapidly, which is exactly what you want! The chemical reaction between the acid (vinegar) and the base (baking soda) works to loosen the stubborn carbon bonds clinging to the steel. Let the mixture sit and cool for 10 minutes.
Step 3: Empty and Wipe Clean
Once the pan is cool enough to handle, pour the liquid down the drain. Use your non-scratch sponge to gently wipe away the loosened burn marks. Most of the black residue should slide right off with minimal effort.
Step 4: Tackle Stubborn Spots with a Paste
If there are any remaining dark spots, do not fret. Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with a few drops of water to create a thick, gritty paste. Apply this paste directly to the stubborn spots and scrub gently with your sponge. The mild abrasiveness of the baking soda will polish away the final remnants without scratching the stainless steel. Rinse thoroughly and dry immediately to prevent water spots.
