How to Clean a Moldy Front-Load Washer Gasket and Eliminate Odors
Published on June 1, 2026The Hidden Source of Your Laundry's Musty Odor
Front-loading washing machines are fantastic for water efficiency, but they have one major design flaw: the rubber door gasket. This flexible seal easily traps moisture, hair, lint, and leftover detergent. Over time, this dark, damp environment becomes the perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew, leaving your freshly washed clothes smelling musty. Fortunately, you can clean the gasket and restore your washer's fresh scent in about 15 minutes using simple household ingredients.
What You Will Need
- White vinegar (or liquid chlorine bleach for severe mold)
- Baking soda
- Warm water
- A spray bottle
- Microfiber cloths
- An old toothbrush
- Rubber gloves
Step 1: Inspect and Clear the Gasket
Put on your rubber gloves and open the washer door wide. Gently pull back the folds of the rubber gasket with your fingers. Check the entire circumference of the seal, especially at the very bottom. It is common to find trapped items like coins, hairpins, hair, and slimy lint buildup. Manually remove any debris and discard it.
Step 2: Spray with Vinegar Solution
Mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle. Generously spray the solution inside all the folds and crevices of the rubber gasket. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes to break down the grime and kill active mold spores. Note: If you have severe black mold, you can use a solution of 1 part liquid bleach to 4 parts warm water instead, but never mix bleach and vinegar together.
Step 3: Scrub Away the Mold and Grime
Take your old toothbrush and gently scrub the stained and moldy areas inside the folds of the gasket. The bristles will help dislodge stubborn mildew without tearing the rubber. For extra scrubbing power on tough stains, mix a small amount of baking soda and water to form a thick paste. Apply the paste directly to the moldy spots with the toothbrush and scrub in a circular motion.
Step 4: Wipe Clean and Dry
Take a clean microfiber cloth dampened with warm water and thoroughly wipe down the entire gasket, removing all loosened mold, soap scum, and vinegar or baking soda residue. Follow up with a dry microfiber cloth to absorb all remaining moisture. Make sure to dry deep inside the folds.
Step 5: Run a Hot Maintenance Cycle
To ensure any remaining mold spores inside the drum are destroyed, sprinkle half a cup of baking soda directly into the empty drum, and pour one cup of white vinegar into the detergent dispenser. Run your washing machine on its hottest cycle (or the "Tub Clean" cycle if your model has one).
How to Keep Your Gasket Clean in the Future
Preventing mold buildup is much easier than scrubbing it away. Follow these three simple habits to keep your washer fresh:
- Leave the door ajar: Always leave the washing machine door slightly open between loads to allow air to circulate and dry out the interior.
- Wipe it down: Keep a dry cloth nearby and spend 10 seconds wiping down the rubber gasket and the inside of the door glass after your last load of the day.
- Use the right detergent: Only use High-Efficiency (HE) detergent in HE washers, and avoid using too much, as excess soap creates a residue that feeds mold.
