How to Clean and Deodorize a Smelly Garbage Disposal in 10 Minutes

We have all experienced that mysterious, sour odor wafting from the kitchen sink. More often than not, the culprit is your garbage disposal. Over time, tiny food particles, grease, and yeast build up under the splash guard and on the grinding blades, creating a breeding ground for smelly bacteria. Fortunately, you do not need expensive commercial cleaners to fix this. You can deep clean and deodorize your disposal in under 10 minutes using common household items.
What You Will Need
- An old toothbrush and dish soap
- 2 cups of ice cubes
- 1 cup of coarse rock salt (or kosher salt)
- 1/2 cup of baking soda
- 1 cup of white vinegar
- 1 lemon or lime, cut into small wedges
Step 1: Scrub the Splash Guard (The Hidden Culprit)
Before turning anything on, make sure the disposal is turned completely off at the wall or unplugged under the sink for safety. The black rubber splash guard at the sink opening is where most of the stinky slime hides. Apply some dish soap to an old toothbrush, pull back the rubber flaps, and vigorously scrub the underside of the splash guard. Rinse the brush frequently and watch the grime disappear.
Step 2: The Ice and Salt Blade Scrub
Plug the disposal back in. Pour the 2 cups of ice cubes down the disposal, followed by 1 cup of coarse salt. Turn on the cold water to a slow trickle, and turn on the disposal. The ice and salt act as a powerful abrasive, knocking loose hardened food debris and scraping the grinding elements clean without dulling the blades.
Step 3: The Baking Soda and Vinegar Volcanic Flush
With the disposal turned off, pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by 1 cup of white vinegar. The mixture will fizz violently—this chemical reaction helps break down stubborn grease and disinfects the entire chamber. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes to work its magic, then flush it with hot tap water for 1 minute.
Step 4: The Citrus Fresh Finish
For a final burst of fresh scent, drop a few small wedges of lemon, lime, or orange into the disposal. Turn on the cold water and run the disposal until the peels are completely ground up. The natural citrus oils will leave your kitchen smelling crisp and clean.
