Why a Sagging Gutter is a Major Problem

A sagging gutter might seem like a minor cosmetic issue, but it can quickly escalate into a household nightmare. When your gutters sag, water pools in the low spots instead of flowing toward the downspouts. This standing water eventually overflows, leading to rotten fascia boards, ruined landscaping, and even water seeping into your basement or foundation.

What You Will Need

  • Ladder (sturdy and safely positioned)
  • Cordless drill with a hex head driver bit
  • Heavy-duty screw-in gutter hangers (often called "quick-screw" hangers)
  • Torpedo level
  • Work gloves

Step 1: Locate the Sag and Identify the Cause

Place your ladder on a stable, flat surface. Climb up and inspect the sagging section. Usually, gutters sag because the old-fashioned "spike and ferrule" fasteners (large nails driven through the gutter into the fascia) have worked loose over time. If you see nails pulling out of the wood, you have found your culprit.

Step 2: Clean Out Heavy Debris

Before making any repairs, scoop out any wet leaves, twigs, or standing water from the sagging section. Heavy debris weighs down the gutter, making it incredibly difficult to lift and accurately realign.

Step 3: Remove the Failing Fasteners

If you have loose nails, do not try to hammer them back into the same hole—they will just pull out again. Instead, use the claw end of a hammer or a pry bar to carefully remove the loose spikes. If your gutter uses clip-style brackets that have bent or broken, unscrew and remove those as well.

Step 4: Install Heavy-Duty Gutter Hangers

The secret to a permanent fix is upgrading to screw-in gutter hangers. These brackets clip over the front lip of the gutter, hook over the back edge, and feature a pre-threaded screw that drives directly into your fascia board, providing vastly superior holding power compared to nails.

  • Position the new hanger inside the gutter, close to where the old spike was (but avoid using the exact same worn-out hole).
  • Push the gutter upward until it is flush and straight against the fascia board.
  • Using your cordless drill, drive the screw through the hanger and into the fascia board until it is tight and secure.

Step 5: Check and Adjust the Slope

For water to drain correctly, gutters must slope slightly toward the downspout—roughly 1/4 inch of fall for every 10 feet of gutter run. Place your torpedo level inside the gutter. Ensure it slopes downward toward the nearest downspout. If it is flat or sloping away, install an additional gutter hanger slightly higher up to adjust the angle and secure the pitch.

Step 6: Test the Drainage

To ensure your repair is successful, take a garden hose up to the roof and run water into the repaired section. Watch the flow: the water should run freely and quickly toward the downspout without pooling or spilling over the sides. If the water flows smoothly, your job is complete!
