How to Fix a Stretched-Out T-Shirt Collar in 10 Minutes
Published on July 28, 2026Why T-Shirt Collars Stretch and How to Fix Them
We have all been there: you pull your favorite cotton t-shirt out of the laundry only to find the collar has developed the dreaded "bacon collar" effect—wavy, stretched-out, and completely ruined. This happens because the ribbed knit of the collar stretches out during wear and washing, causing the cotton fibers to lose their elasticity. Fortunately, you do not have to throw the shirt away. Using a brilliant Japanese laundry hack, you can easily restore a stretched-out collar to its original, crisp shape in under 10 minutes using nothing but ice water and a hot iron.
What You Will Need
- A bowl of ice water (the colder, the better)
- An iron and ironing board
- A flat towel
Step 1: Fold the Collar in an Accordion Pattern
Lay your t-shirt flat on a table. Gather the ribbed collar in your fingers, folding it back and forth in a tight accordion or wave-like pattern. Gathering the fabric this way helps compress the stretched-out cotton threads back together before you apply the cold treatment.
Step 2: Soak the Collar in Ice Water
Hold the gathered accordion fold tightly in your hand and submerge only the collar portion into the bowl of ice water. Keep it submerged for about 30 to 60 seconds. The extreme cold temperature causes the relaxed cotton fibers to instantly contract and shrink back to their original tight weave.
Step 3: Squeeze Out Excess Water
Remove the collar from the ice water. While still holding the gathered folds, gently squeeze the excess water out of the collar. Do not wring or twist the fabric, as this will pull the fibers apart and undo all your hard work. Simply press the water out firmly between your palms.
Step 4: Smooth It Out Flat
Unfold the collar and lay the t-shirt flat on a dry towel. Use your fingers to smooth out the collar vertically, pushing any remaining waves flat. Ensure the collar is lying in its natural, circular shape before moving on to the next step.
Step 5: Iron the Collar Upward
Set your iron to the cotton setting (with steam on if available). Place the iron at the base of the collar where it meets the shirt, and glide it straight upward toward the outer edge. Do not slide the iron left to right along the curve of the collar, as this will stretch the fibers out again. Ironing in a straight, outward direction locks the tightened fibers in place.
Step 6: Lay Flat to Dry
Since the collar will still be slightly damp, lay the t-shirt completely flat on a drying rack or dry towel. Avoid hanging it on a coat hanger while damp, as the weight of the wet fabric will pull the collar down and stretch it out again. Once dry, your t-shirt collar will look as crisp and tight as the day you bought it!
How to Prevent Bacon Collar in the Future
- Wash in cold water: Hot water relaxes cotton fibers, making them more susceptible to stretching during the wash cycle.
- Avoid hangers for storage: Gravity is the enemy of t-shirt collars. Fold your t-shirts and store them flat in drawers instead of hanging them.
- Use a delicate cycle: Harsh agitation in the washing machine pulls and stretches the neckline. Protect your shirts by using a gentler cycle or a mesh laundry bag.
