How to Fix a Stuck Zipper in 5 Minutes or Less
Published on May 31, 2026Step 1: Inspect the Track for Caught Fabric
Most stuck zippers are actually just snagged on the surrounding fabric. Do not pull harder, as this can tear the fabric or bend the zipper teeth. Gently pull the fabric outward away from the slider while slowly wiggling the zipper pull back in the opposite direction.
Step 2: The Pencil Trick (Graphite Lubrication)
If there is no caught fabric, your zipper teeth likely need lubrication. A standard graphite pencil is the perfect tool for this because graphite is a natural dry lubricant.
- Rub the tip of a sharpened pencil vigorously along the zipper teeth, focusing on the area where the slider is stuck.
- Gently wiggle the slider back and forth. The graphite should help the slider glide over the metal or plastic teeth.
Step 3: Use Dish Soap or Bar Soap
If graphite doesn't work, a wet lubricant like liquid dish soap or a dry bar of soap will do the trick.
- Apply a tiny drop of dish soap or rub a bar of soap directly onto the zipper teeth.
- Slowly work the slider back and forth to distribute the soap.
- Once the zipper is free, wash the garment to remove any soap residue.
Step 4: Try a Wax Candle or Crayon
Wax is another fantastic lubricant for stubborn zippers.
Simply rub a clear candle, wax crayon, or even a tube of lip balm along the zipper teeth. Gently pull the zipper down, and it should slide smoothly. Remember to use light pressure so you do not leave heavy wax clumps behind.
