How to Fix AirDrop When It Refuses to Send or Receive Files
Published on June 6, 2026How to Fix AirDrop When It Refuses to Send or Receive Files
AirDrop is easily one of the most convenient features in the Apple ecosystem—until it suddenly decides to stop working. Whether your iPhone is stuck on "Waiting," your Mac refuses to show up on the share sheet, or transfers keep failing mid-way, AirDrop issues can be incredibly frustrating. Fortunately, most AirDrop glitches are caused by simple software miscommunications and can be resolved in under five minutes.
Follow this step-by-step troubleshooting guide to get your files moving again.
Step 1: Adjust Your AirDrop Visibility Settings
The most common reason AirDrop fails is that one of the devices is hidden. Ensure your receiving device is actually open to incoming transfers.
- On iPhone/iPad: Swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen to open the Control Center. Press and hold the wireless settings box (the one containing Wi-Fi and Bluetooth icons) to expand it. Tap the AirDrop icon and select Everyone for 10 Minutes.
- On Mac: Open the Control Center from the top-right corner of your menu bar, click AirDrop, and toggle it on. Set the visibility to Everyone.
Step 2: Disable Personal Hotspot (The Silent AirDrop Killer)
AirDrop and Personal Hotspot cannot run at the same time because they both compete for your device's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios. If you are sharing your cellular data with another device, AirDrop will fail silently.
- Open the Control Center on your iPhone.
- Press and hold the wireless settings card.
- If the Personal Hotspot icon is green, tap it to turn it Off.
Step 3: Force-Reset Your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
AirDrop relies on Bluetooth to discover nearby devices and Wi-Fi to create a secure point-to-point connection to transfer the files. Toggling these radios resets the discovery handshake.
- Do not just tap the icons in the Control Center (which only disconnects accessories temporarily). Instead, go to your Settings app.
- Turn Wi-Fi off, wait 5 seconds, and turn it back on.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait 5 seconds, and turn it back on.
- Repeat this process on both the sending and receiving devices.
Step 4: Wake and Unlock Both Devices
AirDrop will not work if the receiving device is asleep or locked. For security reasons, iOS and macOS disable wireless discovery when the screen is dark.
- Make sure both screens are unlocked and active.
- Keep the devices within 30 feet (9 meters) of each other. Physical obstructions like thick walls or metal desks can severely degrade the signal, so place them right next to each other for the best results.
Step 5: Check Your Mac's Firewall Settings
If you are trying to send a file to a Mac and it simply won't appear, your Mac's security settings might be blocking incoming connections.
- On your Mac, click the Apple logo in the top-left corner and go to System Settings.
- Click Network in the sidebar, then select Firewall.
- Click Options. Ensure that "Block all incoming connections" is turned Off.
Step 6: The Ultimate Fix: Reset Network Settings
If none of the above steps work, your iPhone likely has a corrupted network cache. Resetting your network settings clears out bad system data without deleting your personal files.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset, then select Reset Network Settings.
- Enter your passcode to confirm. Note: This will restart your iPhone and wipe your saved Wi-Fi passwords, so you will need to log back into your home Wi-Fi network afterward.
