How to Fix Discord Screen Share Audio Not Working in 5 Minutes

The Frustration of Silent Streams

You start streaming your favorite game or a video clip to your friends on Discord, only to hear them immediately complain: "We can see it, but there's no sound!" Discord screen share audio glitches are incredibly common, but they are almost always caused by minor software conflicts or incorrect settings. Here is how to restore your audio in five minutes or less.

Step 1: Share the Specific Window, Not Your Entire Screen

The most common reason Discord fails to stream audio is that you are sharing your entire desktop instead of a specific application. Because of operating system security limitations, Discord cannot capture audio from your general desktop display.

Stop your current stream by clicking the Screen Share button and selecting Stop Streaming.
Click the Screen Share button again.
Instead of selecting the "Screens" tab, click the "Applications" tab.
Select the specific game, web browser, or media player you want to share.
Click Go Live. Your stream's audio should now play perfectly.

Step 2: Run Discord as an Administrator

If you are streaming a game or software that runs with elevated system permissions, Discord won't be able to hook into its audio stream unless Discord also has administrative privileges.

Fully close Discord by right-clicking the Discord icon in your system tray (bottom-right corner of your taskbar) and selecting Quit Discord.
Right-click the Discord shortcut icon on your desktop or in your Start menu.
Select Run as administrator from the dropdown menu.
Try sharing your application window again to test the sound.

Step 3: Manually Add the App to Your Activity Status

Sometimes Discord doesn't recognize that an active game or media player is running, which prevents it from loading the necessary audio drivers for that app.

Open Discord and click the gear icon in the bottom-left corner to open User Settings.
Scroll down the left sidebar to the "Activity Settings" section and click on Registered Games.
Click the blue "Add it!" link.
Select the application you want to stream from the dropdown menu, then click Add Game.
Close the settings menu and try streaming again.

Step 4: Toggle the Experimental Audio Capture Method

Discord uses a specialized audio-hooking system to grab sound from other apps. If this system conflicts with your computer's audio drivers, toggling Discord's experimental capture setting will often reset the connection.

Navigate to Discord's User Settings (the gear icon).
Under the "App Settings" section on the left, click on Voice & Video.
Scroll down to the "Screen Share" section.
Locate the toggle that says "Use an experimental method to capture audio from applications".
If it is turned on, toggle it Off. If it is turned off, toggle it On.
Restart Discord and test your stream.

Step 5: Reset Your Voice and Video Settings

If none of the steps above have worked, corrupted temporary configuration files in Discord's audio engine are likely the culprit. Resetting these settings will force Discord to rebuild your audio interface.

Go back to Discord's User Settings and select Voice & Video.
Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page.
Click the red Reset Voice Settings button.
Click OK to confirm. Discord will quickly restart itself.
Note: You will need to re-select your preferred input/output devices (microphone and headphones) after doing this.
