How to Fix a Frayed Phone Charger Cable Safely in 5 Minutes
Published on June 3, 2026The Problem: The Dreaded Charger Cord Fray
Phone charger cables always seem to split or fray at the exact point where the flexible cord meets the rigid plastic plug. Once the outer protective casing cracks, it is only a matter of time before the delicate wires inside snap—or worse, cause a short circuit. If your cable is still charging but starting to split, you can easily rescue it and prevent future damage using simple household items.
Note: If the internal copper wires are completely severed, exposed, sparking, or hot to the touch, discard the cable immediately. This fix is meant for worn, cracked, or fraying outer protective sheathing.
What You Will Need
- Heat shrink tubing (sized slightly larger than the cable head) OR a spring from an old click pen
- Electrical tape (if using the pen spring method)
- A hairdryer or lighter (if using heat shrink tubing)
- Rubbing alcohol and a microfiber cloth
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prep and Clean the Cable
Before applying any adhesive or tubing, you need a clean surface. Dampen a microfiber cloth with a small amount of rubbing alcohol and wipe down the frayed area of the cable to remove finger oils, dirt, and dust. Let it dry completely for 30 seconds.
Step 2: Choose Your Method
Depending on what you have at home, choose one of these two highly effective methods:
Method A: The Heat Shrink Tubing Fix (Most Durable)
Heat shrink tubing is a flexible plastic sleeve that shrinks when exposed to heat, creating a tight, professional-looking seal.
- Slide it on: Cut a 1.5-inch piece of heat shrink tubing. Slide it over the charging connector and center it directly over the frayed area, ensuring it covers about half an inch of both the hard plastic connector and the flexible cable.
- Apply heat: Hold a hairdryer on high heat (or a lighter about 1 inch away, being careful not to touch the flame to the plastic) and sweep it back and forth over the tubing.
- Watch it shrink: Within 10 to 15 seconds, the tubing will shrink tightly around the cable, reinforcing the joint and providing excellent strain relief. Let it cool for one minute before using.
Method B: The Pen Spring and Electrical Tape Fix (No Tools Required)
If you don't have heat shrink tubing, you can use a common metal pen spring to distribute the bending tension and keep the cable straight.
- Extract the spring: Disassemble a cheap, clickable ballpoint pen and remove the metal spring.
- Wind it onto the cable: Gently stretch the spring slightly so the coils are slightly separated. Start at one end and wind the spring onto the thin part of the charger cable, then slide it up so it covers the frayed joint.
- Wrap with electrical tape: To keep the spring in place and cover any sharp metal edges, wrap electrical tape tightly around the spring, starting from the hard plastic plug and wrapping down onto the cable. Cut the tape clean and press it firmly to seal.
How to Prevent Future Fraying
To avoid having to repair your cables in the future, always pull the charger out by gripping the hard plastic connector head rather than tugging on the flexible cord. Additionally, avoid bending the cable at sharp angles while charging your device in bed or on the couch.
