How to Fix a Loose Towel Bar or Toilet Paper Holder in 15 Minutes

Why Cheap Drywall Anchors Fail

We have all been there: you pull a towel off the rack, and the entire bar wobbles or sags. Over time, the constant pulling force causes the cheap plastic sleeve anchors that came with the fixture to pull out, leaving enlarged, crumbling holes in your drywall. Simply tightening the tiny set screw on the bottom won't fix this because the foundation itself is compromised. To fix this permanently, you need to upgrade to toggle bolts (also known as butterfly anchors), which grip the back of the drywall and refuse to let go.

Tools and Materials You'll Need

  • Toggle bolts (3/16-inch or 1/8-inch size work best)
  • A flathead or Phillips-head screwdriver
  • An allen wrench (usually needed for the tiny set screw)
  • A power drill and drill bit (sized to match the toggle bolt instructions, usually 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch)
  • Masking tape (optional, to catch plaster dust)

Step 1: Remove the Fixture and Bracket

Locate the tiny set screw on the underside of the wobbly towel bar or toilet paper holder post. Use your allen wrench or small flathead screwdriver to loosen this screw by turning it counterclockwise. You do not need to remove the screw entirely; just loosen it enough so you can lift the post off the wall bracket. Once the fixture is off, unscrew the bracket from the failing wall anchors.

Step 2: Remove the Old Anchors and Prep the Holes

Gently pull the old, loose plastic anchors out of the wall using needle-nose pliers. If they are stubborn, you can push them flat against the wall and tap them into the wall cavity using the tip of a screwdriver. Next, you will need to enlarge the existing holes slightly to accommodate the folded wings of your new toggle bolts. Check the packaging of your toggle bolts for the exact drill bit size required. Place a piece of masking tape over the holes to prevent the drywall paper from tearing, and drill directly through the tape into the existing holes.

Step 3: Assemble and Insert the Toggle Bolts

Take the metal bracket of your fixture and insert the machine screws of the toggle bolts through the bracket holes first. Once the screws are through the bracket, thread the spring-loaded metal "wings" onto the ends of the screws. Ensure the wings fold inward toward the bracket. Now, squeeze the wings flat with your fingers and push them completely through the drilled holes in the wall. You will hear a satisfying click as the wings spring open behind the drywall.

Step 4: Tighten the Bracket

Pull the metal bracket gently toward you so the expanded wings press firmly against the inside of the drywall. While maintaining this outward tension, use your screwdriver to tighten the screws. Keep turning until the bracket is flush and completely snug against the wall. The bracket should feel rock-solid with absolutely zero wiggle.

Step 5: Remount the Fixture

Place the towel bar or toilet paper holder post back over the secured wall bracket. Ensure it is aligned straight, then tighten the tiny set screw on the bottom by turning it clockwise. Give the fixture a gentle tug to test your handy work—it should now be sturdy enough to handle daily use for years to come!
