How to Fix a Recessed or Loose Electrical Outlet in 10 Minutes

Have you ever tried to plug in a vacuum or a phone charger, only for the entire electrical outlet to push back into the wall or wiggle side-to-side? Over time, the drywall behind the outlet's mounting "ears" can crumble, or the electrical junction box may have been installed too deep behind the wall. This isn't just an annoyance; a loose outlet causes wire fatigue and loose connections, which can lead to dangerous electrical arcing. Fortunately, you can fix this common household issue permanently in under 10 minutes using inexpensive outlet spacers.
Tools and Materials Needed
- Non-contact voltage tester (or a lamp/phone charger to test power)
- Flathead and Phillips head screwdrivers
- Plastic outlet spacers (often called "caterpillar spacers," available at any hardware store for under $5)
Step 1: Shut Off the Power (Crucial Safety Step)
Before you touch anything, head to your home's main breaker panel. Locate the breaker that controls the room with the loose outlet and flip it to the OFF position. Plug your voltage tester into both receptacles of the outlet to ensure there is absolutely no electrical current running to it. If you do not have a tester, plug in a working lamp before flipping the breaker, and verify that the light goes out.
Step 2: Remove the Wallplate and Inspect
Using your flathead screwdriver, remove the single center screw holding the plastic wallplate in place. Set the plate and screw aside. Take a look at the outlet. You will likely see a gap between the metal mounting ears of the outlet receptacle and the drywall, or notice that the green electrical box sits more than 1/4 inch behind the drywall surface.
Step 3: Loosen the Outlet Screws
Use a Phillips head screwdriver to loosen the mounting screws at the top and bottom of the outlet receptacle. You do not need to disconnect any wires. Gently pull the outlet forward out of the wall just enough to expose the mounting screws behind the metal ears.
Step 4: Measure and Install the Spacers
Plastic outlet spacers are designed to snap together like building blocks. Tear off a small stack of spacers and hold them up to the gap behind the outlet's ears. You want to build a stack that matches the depth of the gap between the box and the drywall. Once you have the right thickness, slide the slotted spacer stack over the mounting screw, positioning it directly behind the metal ear. Repeat this process for both the top and bottom screws.
Step 5: Tighten and Re-align the Outlet
Carefully push the outlet back into the wall box, ensuring the wires fold neatly behind it. Tighten the top and bottom screws. The plastic spacers will compress and act as a solid shim, holding the outlet perfectly flush with the drywall. Stop tightening once the outlet is rigid, straight, and no longer wiggles.
Step 6: Replace the Wallplate and Restore Power
Place the faceplate back over the outlet and secure it with the flathead screw. Do not overtighten the faceplate screw, as this can crack the plastic. Finally, head back to your breaker panel, turn the power back on, and test your newly secured, rock-solid outlet!
