How to Replace a Faulty Ignition Coil in Your Car in 20 Minutes

An ignition coil acts as a miniature transformer, converting your car's 12-volt battery power into the tens of thousands of volts needed to spark the spark plugs. When a coil fails, the engine misfires, leading to a rough idle, sluggish acceleration, poor fuel economy, and a flashing "Check Engine" light. Fortunately, on most modern cars, replacing a faulty coil is a highly accessible DIY task that requires only basic hand tools and about 20 minutes of your time.
Tools and Materials Needed
- Replacement ignition coil (specific to your vehicle's year, make, and model)
- Socket wrench set (typically an 8mm or 10mm socket)
- Dielectric grease (optional, but highly recommended)
- Safety glasses and mechanics gloves
Step 1: Prep and Safety First
Park your vehicle on a flat, level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the ignition. Open the hood and let the engine cool down completely to avoid burns. For safety, disconnect the negative battery terminal using a wrench to prevent any accidental electrical shorts while you are working on the ignition system.
Step 2: Locate the Ignition Coils
Remove your car's plastic engine cover (if equipped) to expose the top of the engine. On modern vehicles with a "coil-on-plug" setup, you will see a row of individual black plastic coils sitting directly on top of the engine cylinder head, each secured by a small bolt and connected to a wiring harness.
Step 3: Disconnect the Electrical Harness
Locate the plastic electrical connector plugged into the faulty coil. Gently press down on the locking tab and slide the connector off. Be careful not to yank on the wires themselves, as plastic connectors can become highly brittle from engine heat over time and snap if forced.
Step 4: Remove the Retaining Bolt and Pull the Old Coil
Use your socket wrench to remove the single small retaining bolt securing the ignition coil to the engine block. Set the bolt aside in a secure tray. Next, grasp the top of the ignition coil firmly, twist it slightly back and forth to break any seal, and pull it straight up and out of the spark plug well. It should release with a pop, much like a spark plug wire.
Step 5: Prep and Install the New Ignition Coil
Compare the old coil with the new one to ensure they are identical in length and connector shape. Apply a small, pea-sized dab of dielectric grease inside the rubber boot of the new coil. This grease seals out moisture and prevents the rubber boot from fusing to the spark plug. Push the new coil straight down into the spark plug well until you feel it seat firmly onto the top of the spark plug.
Step 6: Reassemble and Test
Align the bolt hole on the coil bracket with the engine threads. Reinstall the retaining bolt and tighten it with your socket wrench until snug—do not over-tighten, as you can easily strip the soft aluminum threads of the engine block. Slide the electrical connector back onto the coil until you hear a clear click. Reattach your negative battery terminal, start your car, and enjoy your smooth, misfire-free idle!
