How to Replace Your Car's Blower Motor Resistor in 20 Minutes

The Mystery of the Single-Speed Fan

If your car's air conditioning or heater fan only blows air on its highest setting, or if certain fan speeds have stopped working entirely, you do not need an expensive new blower motor. The culprit is almost certainly a failed blower motor resistor. This small, inexpensive component controls the electrical current sent to your fan; when it burns out, current only flows on the unrestricted high setting.

Replacing this part yourself is incredibly simple, requires only basic hand tools, and will save you over $100 in mechanic labor fees. Here is how to swap it out in about 20 minutes.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Replacement blower motor resistor: Buy one specific to your vehicle's make, model, and year (usually costing between $15 and $40).
  • Socket set or nut driver: Most vehicles use 5.5mm, 7mm, or 8mm screws.
  • Screwdriver: Flathead or Phillips (depending on your trim panels).
  • Flashlight or headlamp: You will be working in a dark, tight space.

Step 1: Locate the Blower Motor Resistor

In 90% of modern vehicles, the blower motor resistor is located under the passenger side dashboard, tucked behind or below the glovebox. It is mounted directly into the plastic HVAC ductwork so that the air flowing through the system can keep the resistor cool.

To access it, slide your passenger seat all the way back. Look underneath the glovebox. You may need to remove a plastic under-dash trim panel by popping out a few plastic clips or removing small screws.

Step 2: Disconnect the Negative Battery Terminal

Before working on any electrical component in your vehicle, safety is paramount. Open your hood and use a wrench to disconnect the negative (black) battery terminal. This prevents any accidental short circuits or blown fuses while you work.

Step 3: Disconnect the Wiring Harness

Locate the blower motor resistor, which looks like a small plastic plate with an electrical connector plugged into it, held in place by two screws. Press the locking tab on the electrical connector and gently pull it away from the resistor. If the plastic tab is stiff, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently pry the tab open.

Step 4: Remove the Faulty Resistor

Using your socket wrench or nut driver, remove the two screws holding the resistor in place. Once the screws are out, pull the old resistor straight down and out of the ductwork. Take note of its orientation so you can insert the new one the exact same way.

Step 5: Install the New Resistor

Insert the new blower motor resistor into the opening in the ductwork. Line up the screw holes and hand-tighten the screws to avoid cross-threading. Once snug, use your wrench to tighten them securely—but do not over-tighten, as you are screwing into soft plastic.

Step 6: Plug In and Test

Plug the electrical wiring harness back into the new resistor until you hear a reassuring click. Reinstall any under-dash trim panels you removed in Step 1. Finally, reconnect your negative battery terminal and tighten it down.

Turn your car key to the accessory position and test your fan. Cycle through every speed setting. Your AC and heater fan should now whisper quietly on speed one and blast air on high, fully restored to perfect working order.
