How to Replace Your Car's Engine Thermostat in 30 Minutes

Your car's engine thermostat acts as a gatekeeper for your cooling system. When the engine is cold, the thermostat stays closed to let the engine warm up. Once it reaches operating temperature, it opens to allow coolant to flow to the radiator. If your thermostat gets stuck open, your car will run too cold and your cabin heater won't blow hot air. If it gets stuck closed, your engine will rapidly overheat, which can cause catastrophic engine damage. Replacing a failing thermostat is a straightforward DIY task that requires only basic hand tools.
Tools and Materials Needed
- Replacement thermostat (specific to your vehicle's make and model)
- New thermostat gasket or O-ring (usually included with the thermostat)
- Socket wrench set
- Screwdriver or pliers (for hose clamps)
- Clean drain pan
- Fresh engine coolant (pre-diluted to match your vehicle's specifications)
- Wire brush or gasket scraper
- Rags and safety glasses
Step 1: Ensure the Engine is Completely Cold
CRITICAL SAFETY WARNING: Never work on a hot cooling system. Coolant is under high pressure and can cause severe, third-degree burns. Let the car sit for at least two hours until the radiator and engine block are cool to the touch.
Step 2: Locate the Thermostat Housing
Open your hood and locate the thick upper radiator hose running from the radiator to the engine. Follow this hose back to where it connects to the engine block. The metal or plastic dome-shaped piece that the hose clamps onto is your thermostat housing.
Step 3: Drain a Portion of the Coolant
To prevent a massive mess when you open the thermostat housing, you need to lower the coolant level. Place your drain pan under the radiator drain valve (petcock) or the lower radiator hose. Open the valve or loosen the hose clamp slightly to drain about a half-gallon of coolant into the pan, then close it. This lowers the coolant level below the thermostat.
Step 4: Remove the Upper Radiator Hose
Using your screwdriver or pliers, loosen the clamp holding the upper radiator hose to the thermostat housing. Twist and pull the hose off the housing connection. Tuck the hose upward to prevent any remaining coolant from spilling out.
Step 5: Unbolt the Thermostat Housing
Use your socket wrench to remove the two or three bolts securing the thermostat housing to the engine block. If the housing is stuck, tap it gently with the wooden handle of a hammer to break the seal. Lift the housing away to expose the thermostat underneath.
Step 6: Remove and Note the Old Thermostat
Before pulling the old thermostat out, take a picture of it or note its exact orientation. Pay close attention to which direction the spring is facing (usually pointing down into the engine) and the position of the "jiggle valve" (a tiny brass pin on the rim that must point upward to allow air to escape).
Step 7: Prep the Mating Surfaces
Use a rag and a gasket scraper or wire brush to clean any old gasket material, sealant, or corrosion off the mating surfaces of both the engine block and the thermostat housing. The surfaces must be completely clean and shiny to ensure a leak-free seal.
Step 8: Install the New Thermostat and Gasket
Place the new thermostat into the recess in the engine block in the exact same orientation as the old one. Fit the new gasket or O-ring into place. If using a paper gasket, you can apply a very thin smear of gasket sealant to hold it in place, but do not over-apply it.
Step 9: Reassemble and Refill
Position the thermostat housing back over the thermostat. Hand-tighten the bolts first to avoid cross-threading, then tighten them securely with your socket wrench in an alternating pattern. Reattach the radiator hose and tighten its clamp. Pour the drained coolant (if clean) or fresh coolant back into the radiator or coolant reservoir.
Step 10: Bleed the System and Test
Leave the radiator cap off and start the engine. Let it idle. Watch the radiator opening; as the engine warms up and the new thermostat opens, you will see the coolant level drop and bubbles escape. Top off the coolant as needed, replace the radiator cap securely, and take the car for a short test drive while keeping a close eye on your temperature gauge.
