How to Restore Foggy Headlights in 15 Minutes Using Toothpaste

Why Headlights Get Foggy

Over time, the protective acrylic lens of your car's headlights degrades due to UV rays, road debris, and atmospheric chemicals. This causes a cloudy, yellowed layer that not only looks unsightly but also drastically reduces your night visibility. Fortunately, you don't need an expensive restoration kit to fix this—a tube of standard white toothpaste can do the trick in about 15 minutes.

What You Will Need

• White toothpaste: Use standard paste containing baking soda or mild abrasives. Avoid gel toothpastes, as they lack the grit needed to polish the plastic.
• Microfiber cloths: At least two clean cloths.
• Painter's tape: To protect your car's paint from accidental scuffs.
• A spray bottle with water: Or a bucket of clean water.
• Car wax or UV sealant (optional): To lock in the results and prevent future yellowing.

Step 1: Clean the Headlight Surface

Before polishing, wipe down the headlight with a damp microfiber cloth to remove loose dirt, road grime, and bugs. If you skip this step, dirt particles on the headlight will act like coarse sandpaper and scratch the plastic lens during the polishing process.

Step 2: Mask the Surrounding Paint

Apply painter's tape to the body of your car directly around the headlight. This creates a safe barrier, ensuring you don't accidentally rub toothpaste onto your car's clear coat or paint finish, which can dull the paint's shine.

Step 3: Apply and Scrub the Toothpaste

Squeeze a generous, nickel-sized dollop of toothpaste onto a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Rub the paste firmly onto the headlight lens using tight, circular motions. Focus on the foggiest areas. You will notice the toothpaste turning slightly yellow or gray as it lifts the oxidized plastic layer. Continue scrubbing for 3 to 5 minutes per headlight.

Step 4: Rinse and Dry

Spray the headlight with clean water or use a wet cloth to thoroughly rinse away all toothpaste residue. Wipe the lens completely dry with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Inspect your work. If some foggy spots remain, repeat Step 3 on those specific areas.

Step 5: Apply a Protective Sealant

Because the toothpaste removes the damaged outer layer, the freshly exposed plastic is vulnerable to rapid UV damage. To keep your headlights crystal clear for months to come, apply a thin coat of car wax or a dedicated UV sealant to the dry lens, let it haze according to the product directions, and buff it clean with a fresh cloth.
