The Ultimate Guide to Moving Your 2FA Codes Without the Panic

Upgrading to a shiny new smartphone is exciting, but it comes with one major digital headache: moving your two-factor authentication (2FA) codes. If you wipe your old phone too quickly, you risk getting permanently locked out of your email, banking, and social media accounts. Fortunately, Google Authenticator has a built-in transfer tool that makes this process incredibly simple and secure. Here is how to migrate your codes in under five minutes.

Step 1: Keep Your Old Phone Handy and Connected

The single most important rule of transferring 2FA is: do not factory reset or discard your old phone yet. You must have access to both your old phone and your new phone at the same time to complete the transfer.

  • Make sure both devices are turned on and have at least 20% battery.
  • Ensure both phones have working cameras, as you will need to scan an on-screen QR code.
  • Connect both devices to your local Wi-Fi network.

Step 2: Install the App on Your New Phone

Before you can import your codes, you need the destination ready. Grab your new phone, open the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, and search for Google Authenticator. Download and install the official app. Once installed, open the app and tap Get Started, but do not set up any new accounts manually.

Step 3: Export Your Accounts from the Old Phone

Now, open the Google Authenticator app on your old phone. This is where you will generate the secure transfer key.

  • Tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines or your profile icon) in the top-right corner of the screen.
  • Select Transfer accounts from the dropdown menu.
  • Choose Export accounts.
  • Verify your identity using your fingerprint, face scan, or lock screen PIN.
  • Select the accounts you want to transfer (by default, all accounts are selected) and tap Next. Your old phone will now display a large QR code on the screen.

Step 4: Import the Accounts on Your New Phone

With the QR code displayed on your old phone, grab your new phone to complete the handoff.

  • Open Google Authenticator on your new phone and tap Get Started or tap the + icon in the bottom right corner.
  • Select Transfer accounts from the menu, then tap Import accounts.
  • If prompted, grant the app permission to access your phone's camera.
  • Hold your new phone over your old phone and scan the QR code displayed on the old phone's screen.

As soon as the camera registers the code, your 2FA accounts will instantly populate on your new device.

Step 5: Double-Check and Secure Your Accounts

Before you celebrate, take a moment to verify that the transfer was 100% successful.

  • Scroll through the list on your new phone to make sure every single account matches the list on your old phone.
  • Test one of the codes by logging into an account on your computer to verify that the generated numbers are correct and synchronized.
  • Once you are confident everything is working perfectly, you can safely delete the accounts from your old phone or factory reset the old device.
