How to Silence a Squeaky Bed Frame in 15 Minutes
Published on June 4, 2026The 15-Minute Cure for a Squeaky Bed Frame
A squeaky bed frame is the ultimate sleep disruptor. Every toss and turn is met with an annoying, high-pitched creak that ruins your sleep cycle. Fortunately, you do not need to purchase an expensive new bed. Most squeaks are simply caused by loose joints, friction between wood or metal components, or the mattress rubbing against the frame. Here is how to pinpoint the noise and silence it for good in just 15 minutes.
What You Will Need
- A screwdriver, wrench, or Allen key (depending on your bed's hardware)
- A lubricant (paraffin wax, candle wax, powdered graphite, or silicone spray)
- Felt furniture pads or old socks
Step 1: Pinpoint the Source of the Squeak
Before you start fixing, you need to find the culprit. Strip your bed of all sheets, blankets, and pillows. Gently rock and push down on different areas of the mattress. If you hear the squeak, remove the mattress and box spring and test the frame alone by rocking it from side to side. This will help you determine if the noise is coming from the mattress coils, the box spring, or a specific joint in the frame.
Step 2: Tighten All the Hardware
Loose joints are the number one cause of bed frame squeaks. Over time, the bolts and screws holding your bed together back out due to daily movement. Grab your wrench, screwdriver, or Allen key and systematically check every single connection—especially at the corners and where the headboard attaches. Tighten them firmly, but be careful not to over-tighten and strip the screws.
Step 3: Lubricate the Friction Points
If tightening the hardware doesn't stop the noise, friction is likely the culprit. How you lubricate depends on your bed's material:
- For Wood-on-Wood Joints: Rub candle wax, paraffin wax, or beeswax onto the touching wooden parts. The wax creates a smooth barrier that stops the wood from grinding together.
- For Metal-on-Metal Joints: Spray a small amount of silicone lubricant or WD-40 onto the offending washers, bolts, and brackets. Wipe away any excess to avoid drips on your carpet.
Step 4: Cushion the Wooden Slats
If you have a platform bed with wooden slats, the squeak often comes from the slats rubbing against the inner ledge of the frame. You can easily fix this by adding a buffer. Place adhesive felt furniture tape along the ledge where the slats rest. If you don't have felt tape, wrapping old socks or thin rags around the ends of the slats works just as well to absorb the friction.
Step 5: Reassemble and Add a Mattress Barrier
Put your box spring and mattress back onto the frame. If you still hear a faint rub, the mattress itself might be sliding against the frame. Place a thin, non-slip rug pad, a yoga mat, or a clean blanket between the mattress and the frame to act as a final silencer. Your bed should now be completely silent, allowing you to enjoy a peaceful, uninterrupted night of sleep.
