How to Spot a Hidden Camera in Your Airbnb or Hotel Room

Published on June 5, 2026

Checking into a new hotel room or vacation rental should feel relaxing, but privacy concerns can sometimes cast a shadow over your stay. Hidden cameras have become smaller, cheaper, and easier to disguise inside everyday household objects. Fortunately, you do not need expensive spy gear to protect your privacy. With a methodical sweep and your smartphone, you can easily find hidden lenses in less than ten minutes.

Step 1: Perform a Strategic Physical Sweep

Before turning on any tech, start with a physical inspection of the room. Hidden cameras need two things to function effectively: a clear line of sight and a power source. Focus your search on high-risk objects located near the bed, bathroom, or living areas.

  • Check the usual suspects: Examine smoke detectors, alarm clocks, USB wall chargers, power strips, tissue boxes, and Bluetooth speakers.
  • Look for unusual wires: If an appliance has a wire pointing in an odd direction, or if an object is plugged in but doesn't seem to serve a purpose, inspect it closely.
  • Search for odd angles: Look for tiny pinholes in plastic casings, picture frames, or wall decor that directly face the bed or shower.

Step 2: Use the Flashlight Lens Reflection Test

Camera lenses are made of glass, which naturally reflects light. You can exploit this physical property using the flashlight on your smartphone to catch the reflection of a hidden lens.

  • Darken the room: Draw the curtains and turn off all the lights so the room is completely dark.
  • Scan slowly: Hold your phone's flashlight at eye level and slowly sweep it across the room.
  • Watch for glints: Look for tiny, bright reflections of light. If you see a small blue, purple, or red glint, inspect that spot immediately to see if a camera lens is hidden inside.

Step 3: Spot Infrared Lights with Your Phone Camera

Many hidden cameras use infrared (IR) light to capture footage in total darkness. While human eyes cannot see infrared light, your smartphone's front-facing camera can.

  • Test your phone first: Grab a TV remote, point it at your phone's front camera, and press a button. If you see a flickering light on your screen, your camera can detect infrared. (Note: Use the front-facing camera, as rear-facing cameras often have built-in IR filters).
  • Scan the dark room: Turn off all the lights in your room, open your camera app, and slowly look through your screen at the environment. If you spot any glowing or blinking white-purple lights, you have likely located an active camera.

Step 4: Scan the Wi-Fi Network

Most wireless hidden cameras need to connect to the local Wi-Fi network to stream live footage. You can run a quick scan to see every device connected to the network you are using.

  • Connect to the Wi-Fi: Join the hotel or Airbnb's local Wi-Fi network.
  • Use a network scanner: Download a free network analyzer app like Fing on your phone.
  • Analyze the results: Run a scan. Look for device names containing terms like "IP Camera," "Cam," "Hikvision," "Nest," or generic hardware manufacturers that seem out of place. Note down any suspicious IP addresses.

Step 5: Check the Mirrors

Two-way mirrors are occasionally used to conceal cameras or observation points. You can easily test any mirror in the room using the fingernail test.

  • The Fingernail Test: Place the tip of your fingernail flat against the mirror's surface.
  • Observe the gap: On a standard mirror, there will be a clear gap between your actual nail and its reflection. If your fingernail directly touches its reflection with no gap in between, it may be a two-way mirror.

What to Do If You Find a Camera

If you discover a hidden camera, do not attempt to dismantle it, touch it, or confront the host directly. Take immediate photos and videos of the device as evidence. Leave the property safely, contact local law enforcement to file a report, and immediately reach out to the booking platform (like Airbnb or Booking.com) to secure a refund and ensure the host is investigated.
