How to Stop Your iPhone Screen from Dimming Automatically (Even with Auto-Brightness Off)

Why Does Your iPhone Screen Keep Dimming?

It is one of the most frustrating smartphone experiences: you are looking at your screen, and the display suddenly dims. You open your settings, confirm that your brightness slider is up, yet the screen continues to fade. This happens because Apple has distributed several screen-dimming features across various hidden submenus in iOS, and your phone might also be dimming itself to prevent internal damage from overheating.

Step 1: Turn Off the Hidden Auto-Brightness Switch

Many users assume Auto-Brightness is located under the Display and Brightness menu. However, Apple hid the master switch inside the Accessibility settings. To disable it:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
  • Select Display and Text Size.
  • Scroll all the way to the bottom of the menu and toggle off Auto-Brightness.

Step 2: Disable Attention-Aware Features

If your phone has Face ID, it constantly scans your face. If it detects that you are not looking directly at the screen, it will automatically dim the display to preserve battery life. To turn this off:

  • Go to Settings.
  • Scroll down and tap Face ID and Passcode (enter your passcode if prompted).
  • Scroll down to find Attention-Aware Features and toggle it off.

Step 3: Turn Off True Tone and Night Shift

True Tone and Night Shift dynamically adjust the color and warmth of your screen based on ambient light. While they do not technically lower the backlight, they shift the color spectrum in a way that can make the screen look significantly dimmer. To turn them off:

  • Go to Settings, then tap Display and Brightness.
  • Under the Brightness slider, toggle off True Tone.
  • Tap on Night Shift just below that, and ensure that both Scheduled and Manually Enable Until Tomorrow are toggled off.

Step 4: Deactivate Low Power Mode

When your battery drops below 20 percent (or if you manually enable it), Low Power Mode kicks in. This mode automatically forces your screen brightness down and reduces the auto-lock timer to 30 seconds to conserve battery. To turn it off:

  • Go to Settings and tap on Battery.
  • Toggle off Low Power Mode.

Step 5: Cool Down Your Device (Thermal Throttling)

If you have followed all the steps above and your screen still dims, your iPhone is likely undergoing thermal throttling. When an iPhone gets too warm—due to direct sunlight, heavy gaming, fast charging, or processor-heavy apps—iOS automatically dims the screen to protect internal components. To resolve this:

  • Remove your iPhone case to let heat dissipate.
  • Move the phone out of direct sunlight or hot environments.
  • Close resource-heavy apps and stop charging the device until it feels cool to the touch. Your normal brightness will return automatically within a few minutes.
