How to Stop Your Shoes from Squeaking in 5 Minutes

Identify the Source of the Squeak

Before you can fix the noise, you need to know where it is coming from. Put your shoes on and walk around slowly. Rock back and forth, then side to side. Listen closely to determine if the squeak is coming from inside the shoe (friction between your foot or sock and the insole), the outside sole (friction against the floor), or the tongue and laces.

Fix 1: The Insole Squeak (Inside the Shoe)

If the squeak happens with every step and feels like it is coming from directly under your foot, the culprit is likely friction between the removable insole and the shoe's rubber base.

  • The Baby Powder Trick: Lift the removable insole of your shoe. Sprinkle a thin, even layer of baby powder, cornstarch, or baking soda inside the bottom of the shoe. Reinsert the insole. The powder acts as a dry lubricant, reducing friction and absorbing moisture that causes squeaking.
  • The Dryer Sheet Method: If you do not have powder on hand, place a folded dryer sheet flat beneath the insole. It acts as a physical barrier to stop the rubbing, while also leaving your shoes smelling fresh.

Fix 2: The Outsole Squeak (Slick Floors)

If your shoes only squeak when walking on slick surfaces like tile, hardwood, or gym floors, the bottoms of your shoes are too smooth or have built-up slickness.

  • The Dryer Sheet Rub: Rub a sheet of fabric softener firmly across the entire bottom sole of your shoes. The anti-static residue will coat the rubber and instantly eliminate high-pitched squeaks.
  • The Sandpaper Hack: Gently scuff the bottom of slick, brand-new soles with fine-grit sandpaper (120 to 220 grit). This creates microscopic texture, increasing traction and stopping the squeak without damaging your shoes.

Fix 3: The Tongue and Laces Squeak (Leather Friction)

New leather shoes or sneakers often squeak where the tongue rubs against the inside of the shoe or the laces.

  • Saddle Soap or Vaseline: Apply a tiny dab of petroleum jelly, saddle soap, or leather conditioner to the edges of the tongue where it rubs against the eyelets. Wipe away any excess with a clean cloth. This lubricates the dry leather and silences the squeak instantly.
