How to Stop Spam Text Messages on Your Phone for Good

The Modern Plague of Robotexts

We’ve all been there: your phone buzzes, you rush to check it thinking it’s an important message, only to find a sketchy link claiming your package is delayed or your bank account is suspended. Spam text messages are not just annoying; they are dangerous phishing attempts designed to steal your personal information. Fortunately, you do not have to tolerate them. Here is a step-by-step guide to blocking spam texts and keeping your inbox clean.

Step 1: Never Reply or Click Links

The golden rule of dealing with spam is absolute silence. Never click any links, and never reply—even if the message says "Reply STOP to opt out." Replying to a spammer confirms that your phone number is active and monitored by a real human. This will only result in your number being sold to other spammers, dramatically increasing the volume of spam you receive.

Step 2: Enable Built-In Spam Filters

Both Apple and Android have built-in, highly effective tools to filter out unknown senders and spam. Here is how to turn them on:

  • On iPhone (iOS): Go to Settings, select Messages, scroll down to "Message Filtering," and toggle on Filter Unknown Senders. This creates a separate tab in your Messages app for people not in your contacts and silences notifications for those texts.
  • On Android (Google Messages): Open the Messages app, tap your profile icon in the top right, and go to Message settings, then select Spam protection. Toggle on Enable spam protection. Google will now automatically detect and hide suspected spam.

Step 3: Report Spammers to Your Carrier

Did you know major wireless carriers have a dedicated hotline to fight spam? You can report spam texts directly to them for free. Copy the spam message (do not click any links!) and forward it to the number 7726 (which spells "SPAM" on a keypad). Your carrier will investigate the sender and work to block them at the network level.

Step 4: Block the Numbers Individually

If a specific number keeps harassing you, block it permanently:

  • On iPhone: Tap the sender's icon at the top of the conversation, tap info, and then select Block this Caller.
  • On Android: Open the conversation, tap the three dots in the top-right corner, select Details, and then tap Block & report spam.

Step 5: Use a Third-Party Spam Blocking App

If your built-in filters aren't enough, third-party apps can provide an extra layer of defense by using massive, crowdsourced databases of known spam numbers. Apps like RoboKiller, Hiya, or Truecaller can automatically identify and block spam calls and texts before they ever reach your screen.
