How to Temporarily Fix a Missing Glasses Screw in Under 5 Minutes
Published on June 2, 2026The Emergency Glasses Fix
Losing the microscopic screw from your eyeglasses hinge is a classic daily emergency. Suddenly, one arm of your glasses is dangling, and your vision is compromised. While an optical repair kit is the ideal solution, you likely don't have one on hand when this happens. Fortunately, you can temporarily secure your glasses hinge in under five minutes using common household items.
Method 1: The Toothpick Trick (Best for a Fast, Snug Fit)
A wooden toothpick is the perfect temporary replacement because the soft wood compresses slightly to fill the screw threads, creating a surprisingly tight hold.
- Align the hinge: Line up the holes of the glasses frame and the temple arm. You can use a safety pin or paperclip to help align them if they are stubborn.
- Insert the toothpick: Push the pointed end of a wooden toothpick straight down into the screw hole as far as it will go.
- Snip the excess: Using fingernail clippers or small scissors, snip the toothpick as close to the frame as possible on both the top and bottom.
- Secure with polish (optional): Dab a tiny drop of clear nail polish over the cut ends of the toothpick to seal it in place and prevent it from sliding out.
Method 2: The Twist-Tie Wire Method (Best for Flexibility)
If you don't have a wooden toothpick, a thin piece of metal wire stripped from a standard kitchen twist-tie works brilliantly.
- Strip the wire: Peel away the plastic or paper coating from a trash bag or bread twist-tie to expose the thin metal wire inside.
- Thread the wire: Push the wire down through the aligned hinge holes.
- Twist and tighten: Pull the wire tight and twist the two ends together tightly against the hinge to lock the arm in place.
- Trim and tuck: Cut the excess wire with scissors, leaving just a tiny 2-millimeter twist. Use your fingernail or a pen tip to fold and tuck the twisted end flat against the frame so it won't scratch your face.
Method 3: The Heavy-Duty Thread Method (Best for Longevity)
If you need the fix to last a few days until you can visit an optician, sewing thread and nail polish create a surprisingly durable mock-hinge.
- Thread the needle: Pass a piece of sewing thread (double it up for extra strength) through a needle, or simply push the thread directly through the hinge hole if you don't have a needle.
- Wrap the hinge: Loop the thread through the hinge hole three to four times, pulling it taut each time.
- Tie it off: Tie a tight double-knot with the remaining ends of the thread.
- Seal with nail polish: Apply a small drop of clear nail polish directly onto the knot and the threaded hinge. The polish will saturate the thread and dry rock-hard, acting like a plastic bolt. Once dry, snip off the loose thread tails.
Critical Warning: What NOT to Do
Never apply super glue directly into the hinge. Super glue runs easily and will fuse the hinge shut permanently, meaning you will never be able to fold your glasses arms again, and an optician won't be able to insert a real screw later without breaking the frame.
