How to Test and Replace a Bad Car Relay in 10 Minutes

When a electrical component in your car suddenly stops working—like your horn, fuel pump, air conditioning clutch, or radiator fan—the culprit is often a faulty relay rather than a dead component or a blown fuse. A relay is simply an electromagnetic switch that allows a low-current circuit to control a high-current circuit. Over time, the internal contacts can wear out, burn, or stick. Fortunately, testing and replacing a relay is incredibly simple and requires no special tools.
Tools and Materials Needed
- Your vehicle's owner's manual (or the diagram on your fuse box cover)
- A pair of needle-nose pliers (optional, for stubborn relays)
- A replacement relay (typically costing under $10 at any auto parts store)
Step 1: Locate Your Car's Relay Box
Most modern vehicles have two primary fuse and relay centers. One is located under the dashboard on the driver's side, and the other (usually the main one housing high-current relays) is under the hood in a black plastic box near the battery. Open the hood, locate the black plastic box, and unlatch the cover. On the underside of this cover, you will find a printed diagram labeling what each fuse and relay controls.
Step 2: Identify the Suspect Relay
Using the diagram on the cover, locate the relay associated with your malfunctioning component (for example, the "HORN" or "A/C CLUTCH" relay). Relays are easily distinguishable from fuses; they are larger, square or rectangular plastic cubes. Note its exact position in the box so you do not accidentally pull the wrong one.
Step 3: Perform the "Swap Test" (The Ultimate Shortcut)
The easiest way to test a relay without a multimeter is the swap test. Look at the other relays in the box and find one with the exact same part number and schematic printed on its side. It must control a non-critical component (such as the fog lights or rear defroster).
- Do not swap with critical relays like the ignition, fuel pump, or engine control module (ECM).
Step 4: Pull and Swap the Relays
Firmly grasp the suspect relay and pull it straight up. If it is stuck, gently wiggle it back and forth while pulling, or use needle-nose pliers wrapped in electrical tape to avoid cracking the plastic casing. Once removed, pull the identical, functioning non-critical relay you identified in Step 3. Plug the functioning relay into the slot of the suspect component.
Step 5: Test the Malfunctioning Component
Turn your car's ignition on and test the component that wasn't working. If your horn now honks, your A/C compressor kicks on, or your fan starts running, you have successfully confirmed that the original relay is dead.
Step 6: Install the Replacement Relay
Put the borrowed, functioning relay back into its original slot so your other accessories work. Take the bad relay to a local auto parts store to ensure you get an exact match, or search online using the part number printed on the side of the plastic cube. Once you have the new relay, simply align the metal pins with the slot in the fuse box and press it firmly straight down until it sits flush. Pop the fuse box cover back on, and you are good to go!
