How to Waterproof Canvas Shoes in 10 Minutes
Published on June 9, 2026The 10-Minute Waterproofing Trick for Canvas Shoes
Canvas shoes like Vans, Converse, or Toms are comfortable and stylish, but they have one major flaw: they absorb water like a sponge. A sudden downpour can quickly lead to soggy socks and ruined shoes. Fortunately, you do not need expensive specialty sprays to protect your footwear. You can completely waterproof your canvas shoes in under 10 minutes using a simple, clear wax candle and a standard hairdryer.
What You Will Need
- A pair of canvas shoes (clean and fully dry)
- A clear or white wax candle (paraffin or beeswax; avoid colored or scented candles to prevent staining)
- A hairdryer
Step 1: Clean and Prepare Your Shoes
Before you begin, ensure your shoes are completely free of dirt, dust, and mud. Any debris left on the canvas will get trapped under the wax permanently. Give them a quick brush or wipe them down with a damp cloth, then let them dry completely before moving to the next step.
Step 2: Rub the Wax Firmly Onto the Canvas
Take your candle and rub it vigorously over the entire canvas surface of the shoe. Use firm, circular motions. Be generous with the application; you want to create a visible, chalky white layer of wax over the fabric. Pay extra attention to the seams, tongue, and the area near the sole, as these are the most common entry points for water.
Step 3: Melt the Wax with a Hairdryer
Turn your hairdryer to its highest heat setting. Hold it a few inches away from the shoe and sweep the hot air over the waxed canvas. As the heat hits the wax, you will watch the white, chalky residue instantly melt and disappear into the fabric fibers. Continue blowing hot air until all the visible wax has melted and the shoe looks normal again.
Step 4: Let the Wax Cure and Test
Allow the shoes to sit undisturbed for about 5 minutes so the wax can cool and harden within the canvas fibers. Once cool, the fabric might feel slightly stiffer, but it will quickly soften up as you walk. To test your work, splash a few drops of water onto the shoe. The water should bead up and roll off instantly, leaving your shoes perfectly dry!
